| When is the best time to dive in Colombo & Negombo? Can I dive all year round? We wish we could but the season only runs from October to April. The best time to dive in Colombo & Negombo is December to March. What can I see underwater ? The major marine habitats are rocky reefs and patch reefs. In addition there are several excellent wrecks. Marine life is diverse and some offshore reefs have very healthy coral growth. You will see the regular Indian Ocean reef fish and while large pelagic's are not common, eagle rays, stingrays, dogtooth tuna and Spanish mackerels are frequently seen at some sites. In Colombo the best dive sites are numerous shipwrecks. One recent addition is the Medhufaru which sank in 2009! In Negombo, the reefs are lush with fish life. This includes reef fish, schooling fish, small critters such as Nudibranchs and occasional pelagic such as Eagle Rays and Mantas. How good is the visibility? Average visibility on the inshore reefs is 10-15m. Offshore visibility averages around 20m. On some outer reefs visibility is often around 30m. What is the level of diving difficulty? Many of our best dive sites in Colombo are relatively deep (>18) and therefore ideally suited for slightly more experienced divers. However we do have shallower sites. We will match you with a site that suits your certification and/or experience level. In Negombo most of the sites are around 15m-18m and is great for divers with all experience levels. The far reef, known as Third Reef is about 20-25m deep and has some of the best diving in Negombo. Can I learn to dive in Colombo & Negombo? Yes. You can try Scuba Diving for the first time with our Discover Scuba Diving Program or you can take on of our PADI courses . At what time do you start your dives? Standard 2 tank dive trips usually leave at 9:00am and return by around 1:00pm. We may leave earlier and/or return later when diving some sites further away. Single tank early morning dives and night dives can be arranged. We are flexible. Just ask. Do you organize diving outside of Colombo? We can organize personalized special interest dive trips around Sri Lanka, and also provide diving support for researchers and film crews. We also offer boat charters and trips in the Maldives. Do I need to make a reservation? A reservation is recommended so that we can provide you with better service and also notify you in case of a dive being cancelled. Prior notice is required for special trips and courses. Can I pay in foreign currency or using a credit card? You can pay in either US$ or Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR). Sorry but we don't accept credit cards at this time. How can I get more info or make a reservation? Call us or email us with you're questions, reservation or stories any time! Do I need to be extremely fit and be able to swim really well? You only need to be able to swim 200 meters in any style, there is NO time limit. If you wish to use fins and mask then it is 300 meters, without a time limit. Do people get worried/ scared and is it dark? It is natural to feel a little apprehensive, that is why initial training is done at a depth of 1metre/ 3.3 feet- Usually within 5 minutes people have relaxed. The light penetration in water is excellent, students are generally pleasantly surprised. Do I need to purchase expensive equipment? No, all equipment is supplied for the duration of the course. Is SCUBA diving dangerous? I have never witnessed any of my students receive an injury from aquatic animals or to suffer from a dive related illness. If you follow the rules there is no reason for anything to go wrong, as with all activities there is always an element of risk. Does qualifying take a lot of time and effort? It is standard for students to complete the course in 4 days. This includes viewing the DVD, academic sessions, Confined and Open water sections. The DVD can be viewed and the academics (online) can be completed at your own leisure if you so wish. The Confined (swimming pool) session takes about 3- 5 hours .Diving in the sea takes an additional 2 mornings. Is my qualification valid outside of Sri Lanka? Your certification is valid in any dive center in the world. You will be qualified to dive to 18 meters/ 60 feet. It is valid for life and you will receive a photo ID/ licence. Is SCUBA diving something that will isolate me from the family? This is one of the great aspects of diving- there is no age limit, children as young as 10 can qualify as JUNIOR OPEN WATER DIVERS (12 meters/ 40 feet.). In fact there is nothing more cooler in the eyes of children than being a parent who SCUBA dives and also involving them in the sport. It brings the family together for a common purpose including doing SCUBA dive trips together. Is SCUBA diving good value for money? |
